CHRIS WEST

Chris West has been teaching guitar and bass for over 37 years and still finds deep joy in paying forward what his own teachers gave to him. He creates lessons tailored to each student’s individual needs and musical interests, while ensuring a strong, practical foundation in reading music, theory, and improvisation.

Chris enjoys working with beginners just as much as advanced players and takes pride in helping middle school and high school students prepare for band auditions with confidence.

Raised in a family of music teachers and aficionados, Chris studied classical guitar extensively with Steven Suvada and in master classes with members of the Los Angeles Guitar Quartet and Benjamin Verdery. He continues to learn from musicians across various genres, both to refine his own teaching and musicianship and for the sheer joy of learning—something he loves to share with his students.

As a performer, Chris has played solo classical guitar at weddings, accompanied singers on acoustic guitar, performed in small classical ensembles, worked as a multi-instrumentalist in theater productions, recorded music for advertising, and played electric guitar, lap steel, and electric bass in several working Chicago-area bands across a wide range of styles.
