5 PERSONAL BENEFITS OF PLAYING A MUSICAL INSTRUMENT

Purpose.

Every person yearns to have meaning, value, and purpose in life.  We want to feel as though we belong, and we want to know that we are contributing toward a common good.  As image bearers of God, God has instilled in us these qualities.  Music is a life-long journey where you never stop learning.  In fact, the more you learn, the more you realize how much you don’t know!  Therefore, playing an instrument provides purpose as it gives you something meaningful to do as well as help you impact other people’s lives!

Self-Discipline.

Discipline is doing something, whether we feel like it or not.  We live in a superficial culture of instant gratification and entertainment.  People want to succeed but are unwilling to invest the time, patience, and hard work needed to succeed.  Self-discipline is the link to setting a goal and achieving that goal.  Playing a musical instrument requires regular practice, patience, vision, and accountability.  Thus, playing a musical instrument allows one to develop the art of self-discipline.

Expression.

While the right side of our brain functions components such as intuition, imagination, and insight, creativity is expressed to its fullest potential when we acquire information at our craft and develop our skill set at it. Simply put, the more we learn, the more creative we will be.  Playing a musical instrument is a form of self-expression.  It allows one to connect the great depths of sound, rhythm, and melody with their minds. As a result, playing an instrument propels imagination, creativity, and expressiveness.

Face and Conquer Challenges.

Henry Ford said, “If you always do what you’ve always done, you’ll always get what you’ve always got.”  This quote relates to playing an instrument.  If we always play what we know, we will never develop and grow.  Sadly, many musicians fall into this rut and plateau.  The way to break through boredom and tedium is to challenge ourselves by learning concepts we have never done before.  Although it is hard to do this, the more we face and conquer our challenges, the greater musicians we will be.  We will be able to do things we once thought we could never do and take our skills to the next level!  Facing and conquering challenges also transcends in life as we go through difficulties and setbacks.

Enhance Cognitive Skills.

There are countless studies done by universities and doctors on the benefits of playing an instrument.  Enhancing memorization, mathematical skills, reading skills, and concentration skills are just few of the many cognitive benefits that music offers.  Numerous studies have shown that students who play an instrument perform better academically than students who don’t.  Cultivating and maintaining cognitive skills as a result of playing a musical instrument is essential to keeping the brain sharp and avoiding memory loss.
